As the holiday period officially begins, emergency services have urged South Africans to be safety conscious before venturing to the beach, swimming pools, lagoons, lakes, rivers and dams.

This comes after a 16-year-old girl was left in a critical condition following a drowning incident in Bonaero Park east of Johannesburg yesterday.

It’s understood the girl and her friends were playing in a pool at a residence when they noticed she was not coming up from under the water and immediately called for assistance and initiated CPR.

Emergency services say activities which makes summer great can could also prove fatal if the public don’t know what to do in an emergency.

ER24’s Werner Vermaak says there is an increase of drowning incidents during the festive season and has advised people take caution.

“Watch children at all times, be a responsible adult, make sure that there is always adult supervision. No matter how well your child can swim or even an adult, no matter how well you can swim, never swim alone. Always ensure that you swimming in designated areas and that there are people around you.”
