The group Friends of Bassiouni says the Egyptian government must be held accountable for the continued detention of a South African man of Egyptian descent – without charge.
The group staged a protest outside the Egyptian embassy yesterday demanding the release of Sheikh Abdul Salaam Bassiouni.
The 65-year-old community leader from Lenasia was detained by Egyptian authorities after flying to attend his daughter’s engagement, seven months ago.
He is accused of being part of the Muslim Brotherhood – a claim his family denies.
It’s the second protest in Gauteng in the past month – the Friends of Basssiouni took a stand outside the AU Summit in Sandton – and again yesterday outside the Egyptian embassy.
The son of the detained community leader Bilal say they are protesting against the injustices of the Egyptian government.
“Today we are holding the Egyptian government accountable for my father’s detention and we want them to fix their wrongs immediately.”
He says community members are worried about his deteriorating health…
“We cannot sit idle anymore and we will escalate as much as we can and will not stop under my father is released.”
Bassiouni has been held at the Tora prison for seven months – without being charged.
