The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), South Africa’s third largest political formation, will on Thursday march to the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration.
A communique from the party’s secretary general Godrich Gardee highlighted the choice to protest on November 2 as meant to coincide with 100 years since British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour promised to the Zionist Movement that his government would look favourably towards the establishment of a Jewish National Home in Palestine.
That declaration, said the EFF, “led to the inception of the State of Israel and dispossession of Palestinians of the country of sovereignty and land.”
Gardee said the Red Berets had on the cards a mass mobilisation for Palestine from as early as May this year to pledge support for a mass hunger strike by Palestinian political detainees.
The EFF march will begin at Church Square in the Tshwane CBD proceeding by noon to the Israeli Embassy in Hatfield.
Since its inception, the revolutionary party has been consistent in its support for the Palestinian cause and has echoes calls for BDS and the global isolation of Israel over its treatment of the Palestinians.
