Education Company Apologises to Muslims for Disrespectful Textbook Cover

November 22, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 22-11-2017

A school text book company in Cape Town has apologised to Muslims after the cover of a Grade 8 text book printed with a picture of a mosque and verses of the Qur’an on it was deemed as disrespectful.

Pearson South Africa says it received a complaint from a parent last week that Grade 8 pupils at a Johannesburg school were sitting on the Spot on Life Orientation text book with Qur’anic verses on the cover which is disrespectful to Islam’s holiest book.

The company says after investigating the matter it discovered that the picture on the cover is not in line with the nature of the publication.
Pearson’s South Africa’s Peter Wasserfall says it will be replacing the cover of the text book.

“When we reprint this particular book which will be early in December, the cover of this book will be removed and be replaced with a new publication. We are in the process of then also looking to see how many schools this particular text book has been distributed to and to just assess the protential of recalling these publications.”

Wasserfall says the company’s website has already been updated with the new cover for the publication.
