Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 35,812.
This is an increase of 1,455 from Monday’s announcement.
The number of deaths remains at 705.
The Western Cape has the most infections with 23,583, followed by the Eastern Cape at 4,324, Gauteng at 4,276, KwaZulu-Natal 2,637, Free State 299, North West 271, Mpumalanga 132, Limpopo 193, Northern Cape 91 and unallocated infections 6.
The total number of recoveries to date is 16,809
Mkhize says that the testing effort is progressing well across the nation.
“At this stage, 761,534 tests have been done, of which, in the past 24 hours, 18,792 tests have been done.”
The Eastern Cape has surpassed Gauteng with the number of COVID-19 cases, making it the second biggest hot spot in the country after the Western Cape.
