Arrive Alive says the high number accidents over the Easter weekend is a clear indication that South Africans have no respect for the rules of the road.
Shocking statistics released by Transport minister Blade Nzimande on Tuesday revealed that 591 people died on the country’s roads over Easter – up 14 percent from the 449 road deaths over the same period in 2017.
The minister has sent the government’s condolences to the families of the victims.
Arrive Alive’s Johan Jonck says the high number of deaths on the country’s roads is shocking and simply unacceptable.
“Minister Nzimande also confirmed driver behaviour and the lack of safe driver behaviour is definitely the main cause of these road crashes.”
The number of deaths per province were:
- KwaZulu-Natal – 111
- Gauteng – 89
- Limpopo – 80
- Eastern Cape – 59
- Mpumalanga – 49
- Western Cape – 34
- North West – 34
- Free State – 27
- Northern Cape – 27
