Dr Franklin Lamb: Saad Hariri Will Be a Good PM for Lebanon

May 30, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 30-05-2018

Americans Concerned for Middle East Peace says Saad Hariri will be a good Prime Minister for Lebanon.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun asked Saad Hariri to form a new government, designating him the country’s next prime minister.

Hariri was put forward for the job by 111 of 128 members of Lebanon’s parliament in consultations with Aoun held on Thursday.

It will be the third term for Hariri, who has held the position since December 2016 and was also prime minister between 2009 and 2011.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Director of Americans Concerned for Middle East Peace Dr. Franklin Lamb says Hariri may just be the right person for the job of Prime Minister.

“Under the circumstances of many, many problems and dysfunction and corruption in the country, I would say yes. Of course there’s not a huge choice for president because he’s got to be Sunni.”

Under Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system, the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim, the speaker a Shia Muslim, and the president a Maronite Christian.

Dr Lamb says despite Hezbollah who is on the on US terror list and making big gains in the Lebanese parliament together with its allies wining a total of 70 seats, the US & Israel may be looking to pick a fight with Lebanon.

He says while Hezbollah claims they are not bothered by sanctions the group is under pressure.

“The sanctions are terrifying Hezbollah in Lebanon and all their network of businessman who supply them. So I would say in that sense the fight has begun. I don’t predict myself an all-out war, but as you would know, and your listeners, anything could happen over here.”

In a statement, Hariri said he would form a new government “as soon as possible for the benefit of Lebanon and the Lebanese”.
