Dozens Arrested in Sweden Following Planned Quran Burnings Over Easter Weekend

April 18, 2022

By Umamah Bakharia

More than 40 people have been arrested after violent clashes occurred in Sweden between police and angry protestors after far-right groups planned to burn copies of the Holy Quran.

The violence was sparked by a series of rallies organised by the Danish-Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan.

He says he has burned a copy of Islam’s holy book and wants to do so again.

Saudi Arabia has condemned the actions and is calling it a “deliberate abuse of the holy Quran by some extremists in Sweden and provocation and incitement against Muslims”.

Iran and Iraq have since summoned the Swedish ambassadors to lodge protests.

Radio Islam discusses this further with neuroscientist Dr Summaya Shaikh, studying the neuroscience of violence and aggression in Sweden.

Dr Shaikh says the situation is a “delicate provocation” that the Danish-Swedish politician planned after he lost a seat in parliament. “They did this event in a locality that has a lot of immigrants and particularly Muslims,” she says.

And adds: “the event is not for the political party or having a meeting, it is for every intention of provoking in an area where it is full of migrants.”

This has led to much masked youth in the region retaliating.

“This is absolutely unprecedented and what’s worrying is that it is emerging in one town and spreading to other parts of the country,” says Dr Shaikh.

Police have not been able to contain a riot of this kind however, there have been more reports of property burning due to the riots.
