As the country prepares for Level 3 of the COVID-19 lockdown, Trade and Industries Minister Ebrahim Patel announced that domestic workers would also be allowed to return to work on 1 June, subject to safety protocols.

Patel was briefing the nation on Thursday on the level 3 lockdown regulations that will kick in from next month.

Patel says while there are challenges in a domestic environment,  the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) will be looking to see whether the existing directions may need to be elaborated or expanded to provide for circumstances for domestics to return to work.

“But even as domestic workers return, it is absolutely vital that it be done in those circumstances where it can be done safely.”

Patel says domestic workers should only return to work if they can do so safely while complying with all regulations including those surrounding social distancing, travel, and public transport.
