Does the Democratic Alliance (DA) acknowledge that Israel is an Apartheid state?

While the DA’s Yusuf Cassim agreed, he says the party believes there must be a two state solution in Palestine.

These sentiments were expressed by Cassim at Radio Islam’s election debate at the Civic Centre in Lenasia on Wednesday.

Answering the question from Advocate Yusuf Ismail from ITV, Cassim agreed Israel is an apartheid state.

“Do you agree, that Israel is an apartheid state? Yes I do. The DA hasn’t made that official, I am going to be honest about it. We haven’t said those words. But we have made those calls which are pro-Palestinian calls. Having been there three time, there are two systems of legality, there’s no other way to describe it.”

Asked whether if DA leader Mmusi Maimane was pro-Israeli after taking a photo with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Cassim had this to say.

“There is no DA leader that has been found to be pro-Israeli. You says that Mmusi meeting Benjamin Netanyahu is evidence of being pro-Israeli. Here is [Thabo] Mbeki meeting Ariel Sharon. No one said he’s pro-Israeli.”

The Economic Freedom Fighter’s (EFF) Nazier Paulsen who was also part of the debate says his party stands with the Palestinians.

“Only the EFF want the end of the apartheid Israeli state and the return of all Palestinian lands. The DA and the ANC both support a two state solution, the EFF wants a one state solution.”

Last month during a visit to Radio Islam studios, Maimane said he met with both Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian Authority when he visited Israel and addressed the Palestinian issue with the Israeli Prime Minister.
