What has become a fight against time, it is believed that the level 6 Türkiye earthquake was likely the most potent and severe in recent history.

Speaking to Radio Islam International from Malatya, one of the worst affected cities in Türkiye, doctors without borders, Marcus Barman said the earthquake in the South of Türkiye impacted 9 million people. Three million people have lost their homes and livelihoods, and two million live in temporary shelters, most made up of small family tents.

He said the affected population’s situation is very dire despite considerable relief efforts and aid provision. The nights are cold, sometimes reaching freezing temperatures, along with heavy rains and flooding.

Access to drinking water, food and basic hygiene is still a big challenge for the population. More importantly, the affected families have tremendous psychological and mental stress. The death toll in Türkiye stands at around 50 000 people, and not all of them have been recovered from beneath the rubble.

“We see many families helpless and in shock, desperate, sad, anxious and uncertain about their future in the situation,” says Dr Barman.

MSF supports mental health-related activities for survivors and other affected people, psychosocial healthcare workers and volunteers. As of March 24, 2023, MSF-supported organisations in Türkiye have reached more than 7,500 people in individual consultations and group activities, including kids, teens, and adult women and men.
