Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma says religious gatherings will be allowed from 1 June.
Dlamini-Zuma was briefing the nation on Thursday on the level 3 lockdown regulations that will kick in from next month.
Dlamini-Zuma says while religious gatherings will be allowed from 1 June, health, hygiene and social distancing protocols must be in place and observed at Mosques, Churches, Synagogues, Temples and other places of worship.
“This means that we must maintain 1.5 meters between the worshippers and the maximum of 50 congregants should the chosen venue be able accommodate such. If indeed the venue is too small to accommodate 50 people at 1.5 meters apart, it means there’ll be less congregants in that venue. There must also be wearing of masks and sanitizing of hands and no contact.”
Dlamini-Zuma says the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) have also widely consulted with religious sectors led by President Cyril Ramaphosa to categorize religious counselling as an essential service.
“This will enable the millions of who have been affected by this virus to receive this much needed service since the majority cannot afford professional attention of this nature. “
Dlamini-Zuma says the country will have a national day of prayer on Sunday, but this will be praying at home, or through virtual means.
