Political analyst Karima Brown has told Radio Islam it’s shocking that Social Development minister Bathabile Dlamini and President Jacob Zuma are both failing to take responsibility for the Sassa crisis.
Over the weekend it emerged that no deal has yet been finalised between government and Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to ensure that grants are paid in April when the current invalid contract expires at the end of March.
In 2014, the initial contract between the two parties was found to be unconstitutional and could not be renewed.
Brown says the guidance and leadership shown by Zuma is shocking.
“He actually said that they must not speak about the matter in public, that people must calm down and people who call for Bathabile Dlamini’s axing are speaking prematurely.”
Brown says Dlamini is using everybody as a scape goat for the Sassa crisis including the media.
“So she’s blaming just about everybody, not taking responsibility and of course now the president is saying that we can’t say that she’s failed. And what is at the heart of the matter here is of course the president is unable to grasp as is Bathabile Dlamini that CPS is already fraudulently managing the existing contract. That is what the constitutional court ruled.”
CPS and Sassa have both confirmed that a verbal consensus has been reached for a new contract, however no deal has been signed as yet due to ongoing negotiations.
If a deal is signed between CPS and Sassa it will proceed to Treasury for approval and thereafter move on to the Constitutional Court on 15 March for the final go-ahead.
