The South African government has indicated it’s open for business with Israel.

This comes after International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Minister Lindiwe Sisulu held a briefing with journalists on Tuesday.

Sisulu told reporters that Israel was bidding to buy Clover, South Africa’s largest dairy producer.

She said “there is no economic ban in this country on Israel whatsoever, and the government will allow the normal bidding processes to follow through.”

Palestine Information Network (PIN) and Radio Islam presenter Ebrahim Moosa says Sisulu made it clear that it will trade with Israel.

“This is a very shallow statement. So there being no ban on the deal and the deal will be allowed to go through ignores the role of the occupied territories.”

Sisulu was also asked about the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) resolution to downgrade the South African embassy in Israel saying government was bound by the resolutions of the party.

“She’s sort of saying we will find a way to work around this, maintaining ties, but also adopting the resolution.”

The ANC Youth League has meanwhile rebuffed Sislulu’s comments about the Clover deal saying, “Israel is an abnormal state, and no normal relations should exist with an abnormal regime!”
