Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Fatima Chohan Speaks to Radio Islam about Voter Registration

March 06, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-03-06

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Fatima Chohan has urged people to register to vote saying they must treasure their civic rights and responsibilities.

South Africans have until 5pm this evening to register and to check that their names are on the voters roll in their area.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is hoping to reach nine million unregistered voters during this weekend’s registration drive.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Chohan says 21 years into democracy many anti-apartheid struggle stalwarts offered the ultimate sacrifice to enable South Africans to cast their ballots.

“If we are simply not able to sacrifice half an hour to go and register at our voting districts, well then that speaks volumes about how we treasure our civic rights and responsibilities.”

Chohan has urged people to cast the ballots saying local government elections pertain to issues that are closer to home which includes service delivery problems and also the condition and state of the community.

“So I really want to urge each and every one of our citizens including and very especially to our first time voters, our young people to please go out and register and give yourself the opportunity to vote on voting day.”

To check if you are registered to vote, SMS your ID number to 32810 or visit the IEC website at: http://www.elections.org.za/content/
