Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Fatima Chohan has encouraged Muslim and more privileged schools in South Africa to engage in nation building efforts.
Chohan was speaking during the launch of the state of the art library at the Reakgona Primary School in Fochville on Thursday.
The initiative which is a collective effort between the Lenasia Muslim School (LMS) and Habbatul Ilm Trust is aimed at establishing education centres in under privileged communities across South Africa.
Chohan says education which was a vision of late former president Nelson Mandela plays a vital role in nation building.
“We’ve celebrated Madiba’s centenary a few days ago. He always reminded us that there were many more hills to climb. It is small steps and initiatives like this that really give full expression to that vision of a society that is united in diversity, but more importantly a society that is caring and nurturing.”
Chohan says the issue of learning becomes vital in a society that people envisage to be advanced and equally compassionate.
She says libraries are amazing places that represent everything that humanity has achieved in the past.
“That is what a library is. It’s a collection of knowledge, a collection of history, a collection of technology. All of the advancements of humanity is encapsulated in a library.”
Chohan says South Africa is a very unequal society and has encouraged more schools to embark on new monuments of education so that the brain and heart of a child is equally educated.
