Defend Our Democracy (DOD) activists picketed at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature in Johannesburg on Wednesday to highlight their concerns over corruption in the country’s health sector.

The picket was sparked by the brave actions of slain whistleblower Babita Deokaran who was assassinated after flagging alleged corruption at the Tembisa Hospital.

DOD and affiliated organisations delivered a memorandum to Gauteng’s premier representatives, demanding accountability and oversight of the health sector.

Speaking to Radio Islam, DOD’s Nonkulukelo Mntambo says the work of whistleblowers should not be gone in vain.

“The work of whistleblowers shouldn’t be their own, but they should be systems that flag improper spending and designation of funds,” she says.

This year, the for Anti-Corruption weeks theme is ‘United Against Corruption’, which brings together organisations to stand in solidarity against the plight of corruption in South Africa.
