Police are searching for two suspects after a woman, and two children were shot outside the Nizamiye Mosque in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Tuesday,  at approximately 15h00.

The 41-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son were taken to medical care after sustaining gunshot wounds. Parents that witnessed the shooting say the boy was carried to the school hospital; however, he succumbed to injuries while the mother was in critical condition.

The 13-year-old girl escaped unharmed and is safely in the care of her family.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Masondo, “It is reported that the mother had just picked up her children from school when they were accosted by two men who shot at them. The two suspects then jumped into a parked nearby car and sped off.”

Police say the motive for the shooting cannot be confirmed at this stage. A case of murder and attempted has been opened for investigation.
