Eldorado Park police have told the Democratic Alliance (DA) there isn’t a single safe drug free street in the township.
Members of the DA met with the station commander of Eldorado Park police station on Tuesday to discuss school safety and the violence which has, for a long time, gripped the community of Eldorado Park.
According to the DA, an officer at the police station admitted that, despite their efforts at preventing crime and drug abuse in the area, there are simply not enough officers to patrol all 29 schools in the precinct.
DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Ian Ollis says Eldorado Park is just one community among many in South Africa battling to end the violence which has had an adverse impact on its children.
Ollis says more patrols need to happen at schools.
“Out of the eight highs schools in Eldorado Park. All eight of them have a massive drug problem which leads to violence. The DA wants to see an end to this drug problem and an end to the violence by stepping up crime prevention measures.”
Ollis says without the national government’s intervention, this battle cannot be won.
