Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has requested a postponement of this year`s State of the Nation Address until President Jacob Zuma has been removed from office and parliament elects a new President.
Maimane says he has written to the Speaker of Parliament Baleke Mbete on Wednesday saying there is a leadership crisis within the African National Conference (ANC), with two centres of power who have differing policies, ideological positions and plans of action.
Maimane says it will not be in the interests of the country for Zuma to deliver SONA when there is great uncertainty whether he will remain leader and for how long.
He says last years SONA cost over 11 million rand and South Africa cannot afford to waste public money for Zuma to deliver the government’s programme if his future is undecided.
Maimane also says if Zuma delivers the SONA it will further dent an already damaged credibility in the international community.
I have written to Speaker Mbete, requesting that #SONA2018 be postponed until Zuma has been removed from office, and Parliament votes to elect a new President.
Last year’s SONA cost R11 million. Why spend that kind of money on a President that won’t be around much longer? pic.twitter.com/RyCiIM8r45
