The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it has been refused an oversight inspection of a Lenasia School after concerned parents raised questions about structural problems and overcrowding at the school.

DA MPL Khume Rhumilifo together with Patrick Atkinson and local ward councillor Kishore Badal visited Apex Primary School in Lenasia but were allegedly denied entry into the institution.

The DA says concerns were raised by parents of pupils of the structural problems at the school including dilapidated fire hydrants, lack of electricity, classrooms without windows and the electricity box allegedly completely exposed without any safety mechanisms in place.

Rhumilifo says after meeting with the principal and his deputy to address the concerns, they were kicked out of the school.

“If the principal is not allowing us access, it’s actually denying learners and teachers to teach and learn in a conducive learning environment. I did refer to the MEC for intervention because this is unprecedented.”

Rhumilifo says the DA will continue with its work of ensuring that the safety of children in schools is prioritized and will be back to undertake the oversight.

Last week four pupils were killed after an overhead walkway caved in at the Hoerskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark.
