The South African Institute for Race Relations (SAIRR) says its recent poll has shown the African National Congress (ANC) is ahead in the race as the country heads to the 2019 national elections.
The polls also indicates the ANC is gaining back lost ground, while the country’s two biggest opposition parties, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have both lost ground.
According to the poll results, the ANC’s support in December comes in at 56%, up from 52% in September while the DA’s support has declined to 18% from 23% and the EFF is on 11%, down from 13%.
The IRR’s Gareth van Onselen says the poll is not a prediction but rather “a snapshot in time” of the electorate.
He says the biggest loser is the DA due to number of factors including the so called renewal of the ANC under President Cyril Ramaphoa and the return of members who were alienated from the party by former President Jacob Zuma.
“One of them of course is a general swing towards the ANC and the party suffered a whole series of internal wrangling’s and infighting. The Patricia de Lille leaving in particular, starting her own party would’ve been one factor.”
Van Onselen says if there is low voter turnout during the 2019 elections, the ANC and DA would benefit while the EFF would decline as turnout drops due to allegations and links to corrupt activities.
