The Democratic Alliance (DA) has amended its constitution to include a “recall clause” for members of the party in executive positions who brings the party into disrepute or has lost the confidence of his or her caucus.
The DA federal congress voted in favour of the amendment in Pretoria on Sunday which could pave the way for the party to recall Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille.
The new clause in the DA’s constitution means that if the party’s president, premier, mayor or any public representative elected into the executive office in the DA-led government has lost the confidence in their caucus, they are required to resign within 48 hours.
This is after the person has been given an opportunity to make representations.
Failure by a party member to resign will lead to the cessation of their membership of the party.
The “recall clause” also indicates that any vote of no confidence requires the leave of Federal Executive before it is moved in the caucus.
