Less than a week after the Gauteng Education Department officially opened a newly built multi-million Rand state-of-the-art school in Ekurhuleni, Criminals have stolen equipment worth hundreds of thousands of Rands.

It’s understood the criminals broke the main volt door to access the keys of the entire school on Tuesday after tying up two patrollers.

Menzi Primary School was recently handed over to the community of Tsakane on the first day of school.

Criminals stole nearly 200 tablets, teacher’s laptops, a plasma TV and cash.

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has urged the community to work with police and track down criminals who robbed the school.

Lesufi’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says the MEC is shocked and disappointed.

“It is really shocking. The school just opened on 9 January and] we handed over the school to the community. Now we learn that a robbery occurred there.”

Lesufi says security was in place at the time of the robbery.
