Lenasia residents are venting their anger over what they claim is a crime wave that’s hit the suburb in the past two weeks.
A number of hijackings, house robberies and muggings have been reported involving high calibre rifles.
In the latest crime, three armed men robbed a house in Okapi Street in the early hours of this morning – tying up the family and making off with cash, cellphones and jewellery.
The polices captain Mpande Khoza says the men clad in balaclavas gained entry to the family’s home through a window after tying up the security guard who was patrolling the street.
“They then proceeded inside the house where they also tied up some members of the family and they took six hundred rand cash, three cellphones and jewellery.”
Residents say its crimes like these that make them fear for their lives.
The Lenasia Active Citizenry’ group’s Mohammed Bulbulia says something must be done.
“We need more resources, we need SAPS to be doing more work and we need outside interventions from the PC’s (police commander) office, the safety of community’s office and all relevant departments.”
He says in the meantime they’ll step up neighbourhood watches to better protect the community. – EWN
