Crime Line, SAPS & Primedia Renew Vows to Fight Crime

September 17, 2014

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2014-09-17

The massively successful Crime Line initiative will continue after the South African police and the Primedia Group renewed their Memorandum of Understanding that was initially entered into in 2007.

The renewal was signed at a ceremony launching the 35th Crime Stoppers International Conference, which will be jointly hosted by the SAPS and Crime Line next in October 2014 in Cape Town.

“Indeed Alhamdulillah seven years later were are taking the Crime Line iniative to the next level…as we reflect, we started Crime Line in a very small way, a partnership between the public, the media and the police, ” Yusuf Abramjee the head of Crime Line told Radio Islam.

“…And I must place on record our sincere appreciation to Radio Islam for the ongoing support.”

As a direct result of tip-offs received via Crime Line and Crime Stop, between 2007 and 2014, 3 280 people have been arrested and over R56 million worth of illegal or unlawfully-obtained property and goods have been seized.

At the ceremony SAPS National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Primedia CEO Roger Jardine urged whistle blowers to continue reporting all criminal activity in their communities to the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 and the Crime Line SMS number 32211

Crime also launched their new logo at the event.

“Boldly embodying our credibility and authority as an independent crime tip-off service, the new Crime Line logo represents our commitment to accessibility and providing an effective way to get tip offs to the SAPS.”

“We all live in fear, there no doubt about that. But that shouldn’t allow us to give up hope. Many of our listeners on Radio Islam have fallen victim to crime…We cannot give up to these criminal elements and have to take this philosophy of blowing the whistle on crime to every corner of South Africa,” said Abramjee.
