As the world acknowledges World Mental Health Day, NGO Crazy for Walking says there is a major escalation of mental illness incidents globally, with one in three people affected by psychiatric illnesses and 75% not seeking treatment for it.
The organisation has embarked on an initiative aimed at de-stigmatising mental illness and broadening awareness of mental wellness.
Crazy for Walking has reached out to South Africans to take some steps to remove the stigma of mental illness and to join on a “crazy” quest, a walk to Mars with the objective to reach 54.6 million kilometres, the shortest distance between Earth and the red planet in the shortest time possible.
CEO Francois Louw says while it’s physically impossible to walk to Mars, they’ve created an app to attack the stigma against mental illness by embracing the word “crazy”
“We’ve created this app ‘Crazy for Walking’ and people can join and donate their steps, the kilometres that they walk to this common cause, this common goal of walking as far as possible to break down this stigma of mental illness.”
The Crazy for Walking App (available as a free download in both the Apple and Google stores) has a counter that combines the distances walked by all people using the App.
