Elderly South Africans will from Friday 4pm be able to register for the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has launched the official South African COVID 19 Vaccination Programme Registration Portal.

Mkhize says the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) is now available to the general public and he has invited all citizens aged 60-years and older to register for vaccination.

“This launch marks a significant milestone not only for our vaccination campaign but for South Africa’s advancement towards Universal Health Coverage: This is the first time in our democratic history that a major public health campaign will be supported by one digital system for all South Africans.

Mkhize says all South Africans will have access to the COVID-19 vaccines through the same process, by enlisting using The EVD system.

“There will be no distinction between private and state health care users, with the exception that private health care users will input their medical aid details. The quality of services will be the same for all of us and the system will assign a vaccination site closest to our homes or where we work- not based on whether a particular site is a public or private facility.”

Mkhize says the system is a representation of the future of health care in the country.

Earlier this week the health minister said that South Africa would voluntarily and temporarily suspend the roll-out of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine following the announcement by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the temporary suspension of the use of the vaccine in the United States.
