COVID-19 Infections Spike to 324,221 – Deaths Increase to 4,669

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 324,221

This is an increase of 13,172 from Wednesday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 216 bringing the total to 4,669

Gauteng has the most infections with 117,895  followed by Western Cape at 82,986, Eastern Cape at 57,186, KwaZulu-Natal 35,604, Free State 7,312, North West 11,891, Mpumalanga 5,572, Limpopo 3,883, Northern Cape 1,831 and unallocated infections 61.

The total number of recoveries to date is 165,591, which translates to a recovery rate of 51%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 2,324,923 this is an increase of 46,796 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 216 COVID-19 related deaths – 7 from Mpumalanga, 10 from Free State, 41 from KwaZulu- Natal, 25 from Eastern Cape, 47 from Western Cape and 86 from Gauteng. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 4,669.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
