One hundred and eighteen more people have died in South Africa after contracting the coronavirus.

These latest fatalities bring the national death toll to 21,201

The Health Ministry says that another 3,250 infections were also picked up over the past 24-hour cycle, pushing the number of known cases since the start of the outbreak to more than 775,502

The recovery rate is at 92.5%, meaning that so far, more than 717,629 people have recuperated.

The Eastern Cape still has the highest number of active cases, with over 9,738 in that province.

Earlier Gauteng acting health MEC Jacob Mambolo said the grim increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the country is worrying, adding that “modellers” have indicated that a second surge of the pandemic is imminent.
