COVID-19 Gauteng Infections Hit 200,000 Mark As National Infections Rise to 589,886

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 589,8865.

This is an increase of 2,541 from Sunday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 143 bringing the total to 11,982.

Gauteng has the most infections with 200,237 followed by Western Cape at 102,609, Eastern Cape at 84,092, KwaZulu-Natal 106,037, Free State 32,304, North West 23,305, Mpumalanga 21,474, Limpopo 11,757, Northern Cape 8,021 and unallocated infections 50.

The total number of recoveries to date is 477,671 which translates to a recovery rate of 80%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 3,415,670 this is an increase of 15,032 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably we report 143 new COVID-19 related deaths: 50 from Eastern Cape, 14 from Gauteng, 14 from KwaZulu Natal, 3 from Northern Cape, 5 from Free State, 25 from Mpumalanga and 32 from Western Cape. This brings the cumulative total of reported COVID-19 related deaths to 11,982.

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
