COVID-19 Deaths Jump to 1,568, Infections Rise to 73,533

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 73,533.

This is an increase of 3,495 from Sunday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 88 bringing the total to 1,568.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 44,143 followed by Gauteng at 12,193, Eastern Cape at 10,597, KwaZulu-Natal 3,959, Free State 512, North West 1,177, Mpumalanga 322, Limpopo 362, Northern Cape 205 and unallocated infections 63.

The total number of recoveries to date is 39,867 this translates to a recovery rate of 54.2%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,148,933 this is an increase of 26,975 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 88 COVID-19 related deaths: 73 from Western Cape, 9 from the Eastern Cape, and 6 from Gauteng Province.This brings the total national deaths to 1568 with a mortality rate of 2,1%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families.
