The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 83,890.
This is an increase of 3,478 from Wednesday’s announcement.
The number of deaths has also increased by 63 bringing the total to 1,737.
The Western Cape has the most infections with 47,522 followed by Gauteng at 15,898, Eastern Cape at 12,639, KwaZulu-Natal 4,360, Free State 649, North West 1,606, Mpumalanga 461, Limpopo 489, Northern Cape 214 and unallocated infections 52.
The total number of recoveries to date is 44,920 this translates to a recovery rate of 55.1%.
Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,228,098 this is an increase of 27,362 which were done in the last 24 hours.
“Regrettably, we report a further 63 COVID-19 related deaths- 6 from Eastern Cape and 57 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1 737. The mortality rate is 2,1%.”
Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
