‘Covid-19’ and ‘Sanitizer’ Among New Settlements in South Africa

July 20, 2020

A community in a newly built corrugated iron informal settlement near Cape Town has named it Covid-19.

The residents cannot afford to pay rent, having lost their employment due to the coronavirus pandemic. The BBC reports the informal settlement has different sections named ‘Covid-1’, ‘Covid-2’ etc. right up until ‘Covid-19’.

Meanwhile, another informal settlement nearby has been named ‘Sanitizer’, also, sadly, a reflection of the effects that the virus is having on some communities.

More than three million South Africans have lost their jobs since the lockdown began in the country on March 26. As coronavirus infection numbers rise sharply, ordinary South Africans are struggling to cope with the devastating economic impact of the pandemic.
