The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has denounced the announcement by Telkom to cut 300 jobs in the company’s corporate office, and outsource 254 others.
The trade union federation is calling on government to intervene and put a stop to these retrenchments.
Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says Telkom has shown they are not dealing and engaging with stakeholders including their affiliate Communication Workers Union (CWU).
“We have had discussions over this issue of Telkom planned job cuts, this has been happening for the last 10 years and we are not going to allow that.”
Pamla says Telkom has been outsourcing workers and getting rid of workers contracted to the company.
“This ‘crude stunt’ by Telkom to is a sneaky attempt to undermine the wage negotiations process.”
Pamla reiterated the recent unemployment statistics have created an illusion there is an improvement, but the recent retrenchments paint a dire situation of thousands of workers joining the unemployment line.
Telkom Management was uncontactable when approached for comment.
