The Congress of the People’s (COPE) Dennis Bloem says President Cyril Ramaphosa lied to South Africans when he said that load shedding would be a thing of the past.

On Monday Eskom CEO Andre De Ruyter warned South Africans they face another five years of load shedding adding that there would be a shortfall in the supply of electricity of approximately 4 000 megawatts  during that period.

Bloem says Ramaphosa was not honest when he addressed the load shedding issue.

“When President Cyril Ramaphosa campaigned for the position of the president, he promised the country that load shedding will be a thing of the past. Now we are told by Eskom that we must prepare ourselves to live with load shedding for the next five years.”

Bloem says the government does not realize the devastating impact load shedding has on the economy.

“Our country is heading to another Zimbabwe, another failed African state. More and more people are going to join the unemployment army. Poverty will drastically increase; more people will go to bed on an empty stomach.”

Bloem says the African National Congress (ANC) has destroyed a “once booming economy.”
