Congo-Brazzaville Bans Niqab (face veil) in Public Places

May 02, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-05-02

Authorities in Congo-Brazzaville have banned people from wearing the full face Islamic veil, including the hijab in public places.

They have also banned Muslims from other countries spending nights in mosques

They say these measures are to counter extremism.

Thousands of people, mainly Muslims have fled violence in the neighbouring Central African Republic to Brazzaville.

A government spokesperson says while theirs is a secular country that respected all religions, some women have previously used the veil as a disguise in order to commit terrorist offences. – Agencies
