Concerns Raised Over Sadaqatul Fitr Amount Clarified

June 26, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-26

As the blessed month of Ramadan enters the last ten days, questions have been raised if the compulsory Sadaqatul Fitr is sufficient for the less fortunate that it is distributed to.

A Report has emerged that the 22 Rand Sadaqatul Fitr for the Hanafi Mathab (Sha’fi – 28 Rand) calculated for Ramadan 1437 is a lowly sum and cannot be justified when comparing it to extravagant ladened tables of many other Muslims during Eids day.

However, Mufti Emran Vawda Damat Barakatum told Radio Islam a person is free to give any amount he wishes.

“What is stipulated is the minimum. Even in today’s terms a person can have a very basic meal with 22 Rand. It is just that our standards have changed, both rich and poor.”

Mufti Vawda says these differences should not allow the shari’ah to be attacked.

“Rather encourage people to voluntarily give more. And Allah Ta’ala knows best.”

According to hadith, Sadaqatul Fitr is calculated on one sa’a, which is approximately 2kg of dates.

Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid-ul-Fitr  is expected to be on the 6th of July 2016 Insha’Allah.
