Concerns have been raised about apparently ‘rude’ City Power electricity pre-termination notices issued to residents who are in arrears with their municipal accounts.
Residents say the letters are rudely phrased and are being stuck on the walls and garages of homes with an ‘official’ presumably from City Power taking photos of the house where the notice was placed.
Some residents also claim that these so called ‘officials’ are entering their yards which may seem suspicious given the number of crime related incidents in the area.
Resident Augustine Ledwaba wrote on WhatsApp that Eskom must engage people if they want them to settle their overdue accounts.
“People are struggling and most people need consultation on how city council need to recoup electricity money from residents. Don’t just say in the middle of winter ‘we are coming to disconnect.’ People won’t allow it, its provocation.”
Ward Councillor Kishore Badal say he is aware of the notices and has consulted with the Joburg MMC on finance about the matter.
“I wrote to the MMC for finance on the matter asking for the termination notices be suspended while investigations continue to determine the extent and where the fault lies.”
Resident have been urged not to ignore the pre-termination notices but rather approach their City Power office to arrange a payment plan for accounts that are in arrears.
