Concerns have been raised about a foul smell near the Al Aqsa School and Masjid Bilal in Lenasia Extension 5.
Residents says the odour is quite strong and affecting people attending the masjid including pupils at school.
It’s understood the stench was reported to authorities last week.
Local ward councillor Kishore Badal says while Joburg water has confirmed that the smell was not emanating from any drains in the area, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has been called in to investigate the source of the odour.
Badal says some streets including Sirkon and Marmar were also affected by the smell.
“They did find that there was a pipe running from the school into the drain and through that pipe there was some gaseous substance that was bubbling. They were afraid to do anything with it because they needed people with the correct protective gear and somebody that understands gaseous substances.”
He says the JRA is expected to take necessary action to alleviate the odour.
“What they were going to do is between today and tomorrow vacuum the area, particularly the area in front of the mosque, so if there is anything that is happening, that thing gets blown out.”
Badal says he will keep the community informed about the situation.
