The Oriental Plaza in Fordsburg says it has taken every precaution to protect shoppers against COVID-19 at the mall.

Radio Islam received a number photos from a source showing several shops that have been vacated and available for letting with concerns being raised about the businesses allegedly not being viable due to a lack of shoppers at the mall.

Concerns were also raised by the source that the shop rentals had been allegedly spiked to make up for the alleged loss of rental income during the lockdown in which businesses were not trading and subsequently have fallen on economic hardship.

The Oriental Plaza is an iconic shopping mall that have been frequented by shoppers from across the country.

In a statement, the management of Oriental Plaza says since the mall is a sectional title and the body corporate not being the landlord, it is very difficult to comment on behalf of individual landlords who may have various reasons for letting out their stores.

“Each landlord may have a different and specific reason for doing so. Rentals are negotiated privately between landlord and tenant, so once again the Body Corporate is not privy to this information and cannot comment further.”

Management says the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted every mall and not only the Oriental Plaza.
