Consumer journalist Wendy Knowler has told Radio Islam that bright that brightly coloured icings and glitters sprinkled on cupcakes are not food grade, but are tiny bits of plastic, which is being widely mis-sold and mis-used.
Last week the UK’s Food Safety issued an alert about the entire range of products made by South Africa’s most prominent cake decorations company Rolkem.
It says Rolkem “failed to provide assurances of product safety”‚ and thus there was a potential risk that they could contain heavy metals‚ unapproved non-food pigments and/or other unapproved ingredients”.
Knowler says many people who use the coloured icings and glitters are shocked by the recent revelations.
“I think people buying these things to make commercially and even at home, must ask for certification certificates and data sheets, because in the case of the Rolkem product, it was found to contain copper, which is not really something that has any business being in a human body or being ingested.”
Earlier this year, a batch of two Rolkem gold colours were recalled from the UK market after being found to contain high levels of copper.
Knowler has urged consumers to avoid cake decorating products with illegal labels emphasising that products must have a full list of ingredients‚ a batch number‚ best before date and the supplier’s name and contact details.
