Concern Raised Over High Level Of Teacher Absenteeism In South Africa

April 10, 2019

Radio Islam International – 2019/04/10

Teacher absenteeism is a problem, and seems to be the latest thorn for Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.

This was revealed by Minister Motshekga, who released the findings of the School Monitoring Survey (SMS) in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Motshekga pointed out that the trend of teacher absenteeism from classrooms throughout South Africa is marginally growing, and remains a cause for concern.

Greg Masondo – the Chief Executive Officer of teacher union Naptosa told Radio Islam that they will not condone teachers from staying away from school for no reason.

The report states that between 10% and 12% of teachers are not in school, amounting to around 45 000 absent teachers every day.
