Concern Raised By Residents In Lenasia Following Incidents Of Alleged Illegal Land Grabs

October 23, 2018

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/10/23

Concern has been raised by residents of Extension 13 in Lenasia following attempts by a group of people allegedly trying to occupy land illegally in the area, south of Johannesburg.

At the beginning of the month, residents came face to face with the alleged land invaders who arrived in bakkies with spades and wheelbarrows to occupy a piece of land.

Speaking to Radio Islam on condition of anonymity, a resident from an apartment block in Extension 13 says factions are trying to allegedly expropriate the vacant land directly opposite the property.

“I think because they sensing opposition, they becoming intimidating and trying to cause problems.”

The resident says the owner of the land was notified and has laid charges with the South African Police Service.

“The group have left the area for now, but they will definitely be back because they have an agenda.”

It is believed that the alleged land invaders wear Economic Freedom Fighter’s regalia, however the resident was not able to confirm whether they have any affiliation with the political party and assumes the alleged group is operating on their own accord.

The police’s Captain Hector Netshivodza says a land invasion case has been opened.

“Nobody is arrested yet at this stage, we are now investigating and monitoring the situation.”

Netshivodza also confirmed that the alleged land invaders affiliate themselves with the EFF.

“Some of the people who were there were wearing the T-shirt of the EFF.”

Netshivodza says police will be patrolling the area throughout the day.

Radio Islam attempted to contact the EFF’s Gauteng Provincial Chairperson for comment, however to no avail.
