Community Police Forum (CPF) Speaks Out on Recent Crime Wave around Lenasia

August 03, 2015

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Lenasia residents have been the victims of a recent surge in criminal incidents around the suburb. There were reports of the elderly being targeted by criminals, rape, murder, prisoner escapes in recent months.

Recently it has emerged that the Community Police Forum in a number of stations and clusters are either on an interim basis or are completely dysfunctional.

Mohammad Bulbulia and Ebrahim Asvat, who are CPF members joined Ml Sulaimaan Ravat in studio this morning looking at all the issues surrounding crime in Lenasia explaining how each and every community member should become involved in combatting crime.

The CPF elections last year took 7 months initially where relative blocks and sectors were chosen which was followed by the final election which was run by the MEC’s office with SAPS and respected officials present.

Even though there are allegations that the CPF has been dissolved new reports have emerged that police stations are holding new elections with the CPF for new blocks to be monitored.

Bulbulia says “that they went in with an intent sparing no justice as Lenasia is known as the “tcho tcho” republic of South Africa and with this they stepped on toes of members and police that are corrupt”.

Asvat says even though police are stationed 100 or 200 metres away from the rail-way station people are still getting mugged, he also questioned why SAPS can’t station police officers at these specific areas.

He says “they are getting numerous complaints from saying people don’t want to open cases, which is understandable when police are 200 metres away from these crime hotspots”.

Bulbulia concluded by saying that the community should participate in the upcoming CPF elections which will take place on Saturday the 6th of August for the new revamped CPF of Lenasia.

He was quoted as saying “everybody should engage with SAPS especially the religious bodies and we all need to work together by taking the task to hand”
