Five trucks have gone up in flames on Van Rheenen’s pass on the N3 following a mechanical problem on a tanker carrying fuel.
It’s understood the tanker was travelling down Van Rheenen’s pass on Sunday night when it experienced mechanical problems.
The N3 Toll Concession says the driver then pulled over, but the vehicle caught fire, and the fuel spilled over onto the road and quickly spread to four other trucks in traffic.
Speaking to Radio Islam, the N3 toll concession’s Con Roux says the northbound section of the highway will remain closed until at least this afternoon.
“So we had a total road closure on the N3 through last night. Fortunately at present there is one lane open in each direction, so traffic is moving but very, very slowly. Our advice to motorists would be still to avoid Van Rheenens Pass. That northbound closure is going to be place for most of the day today.”
Roux says cleanup operations are underway to make sure the roads is safe for motorists when it is reopened.
