Civilians Killed in Kabul Attack

November 21, 2020

At least eight civilians had been killed and dozens more wounded on Saturday, when rockets slammed into Kabul, Afghanistan’s, Green Zone. The Green Zone is home to embassies and international firms, and features tight security. The death toll is expected to rise.

Tariq Arian, spokesman for the interior ministry, said the rockets had been mounted on a small truck from which they were launched, by ‘terrorists’. There is an investigation under way to discover  how the vehicle had entered the city, undetected.

Al Jazeera reports that social media videos show the projectiles being launched, with images showing damaged cars and a hole in the side of a building.

The Taliban has denied involvement in the attack. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said, “The rocket attack in Kabul city has nothing to do with the mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate.” According to Al Jazeera the attack came two days before a major donor conference for Afghanistan, to be held in in Geneva, Switzerland.

Two small “sticky bomb” explosions had been also been reported earlier Saturday, one involving a police car. A policeman was killed, and three others wounded.
