With the recent heatwave conditions, the city of Johannesburg has called on the public not to swim in streams, but to rather use designated municipal swimming pools.
This comes after a 14-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy drowned in a stream in Kliptown, Soweto.
An 11-year-old girl survived the incident and was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for medical care.
They were part of a group of children who are believed to have gathered at the stream for a swim.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged parent to keep a close eye on children.
“We just want to urge all our residents out there especially adults and parents to monitor young kids to stay away from river streams so that we can be able to prevent drowning incidents like this one.”
At the same time, the Water and Sanitation Department says dam levels across the country continue to drop as it hasn’t been raining sufficiently to cause significant changes.
The department says the Vaal Dam is at around 30 %.
