The City of Johannesburg says the impact of illegal connections and the loss revenue across the city is astronomical.
The city launched an operation to target properties developed without following the proper procedures in Fourways, under the auspices of Buya Mthetho.
Mayor Herman Mashaba expressed his shock to find that close to R9 million had been lost in revenue due to illegal connections to the City’s services by the three developments that were targeted.
Mayoral spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says the Illegal connections are an affront to all residents of Johannesburg.
He says the lost revenue due to illegal connections directly impacts the City’s ability to maintain its infrastructure and continue projects.
“It’s hugely unfair to law abiding residents who have the means to pay and do pay for their services while other take advantage of the situation and connect to our services illegally.”
Mfeka says the city has also become aware of so called “runners” who are working with corrupt officials to illegally remove business and residential properties from the City’s database whilst illegally connecting these properties to City services.
