The City of Johannesburg says the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has repaired more than three thousand potholes across the city.

The city says while the rainy season is beginning to wind up, the heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc on the roads.

It says the JRA typically receives higher numbers of reports of potholes from residents around this time of year.

In a statement, Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says due to massive infrastructure backlogs, over 3 900kms of the city’s roads had fallen into the classification of “poor” or “very poor” conditions.

He says most of the city’s roads have gone past their design lifespan, normally set at about 30 years, with factors such as traffic (loading), drainage system, floods also contributing to the state of the deteriorating road network.

“It is our responsibility to maintain public infrastructure. We are well aware of the formidable work that lies ahead of us. We also know we have to carry out the repairs and maintenance of roads at a quicker rate – for this reason, the JRA has been testing the Jetpatcher road rehabilitation solution system.”

Mashaba says The Jetpatcher system is not there to replace the current workforce, but to assist the JRA to accelerate the patching of potholes and the current workload, as well as upskill the existing workforce on the use of new technology.
